A freeze-dryer consists of a vacuum chamber, temperature-controlled shelves, a condenser, and a vacuum pump. Vials, ampoules, or bulk trays hold the product during the cycle. The condenser traps water vapor as ice at a temperature lower than the product. Cycle development balances shelf temperature, chamber pressure, and time. Scale-up can be difficult because heat and mass transfer change with equipment size, so process analytical tools and conservative validation are often used.
Lyophilization is a dehydration technique in which a product is frozen and the solvent is removed under reduced pressure. The low pressure allows ice to sublimate directly into vapor without passing through a bulk liquid phase. This differs from conventional drying, where heat drives evaporation and can damage heat-sensitive structures. The process is used for biological materials, pharmaceutical formulations, and some foods. Its main advantage is preservation of porous structure and rapid reconstitution.
The physics of lyophilization depends on phase boundaries and heat and mass transfer. During primary drying, heat supplied to the product must equal the latent heat of sublimation, while water vapor moves through the drying cake to the condenser. If shelf temperature or pressure is set too high, the ice front can exceed the collapse temperature, causing meltback or pore collapse. If conditions are too cold, drying slows and costs rise. Formulation excipients, vial geometry, and freezing rate alter these limits.
Equipment for lyophilization includes a vacuum chamber, temperature-controlled shelves, a condenser, and a vacuum pump. A refrigeration system cools the shelves and condenser below the product's freezing point. Process monitoring often uses Pirani and capacitance manometers, thermocouples, and resistance sensors. Cycle development balances product quality with time and energy use. Some products are annealed during freezing to improve crystallization of bulking agents. Open questions remain about scaling cycles between laboratory, pilot, and production freeze-dryers.
Lyophilization, also called freeze-drying, removes water from a frozen material by sublimation under reduced pressure. The process begins with freezing, which converts free water into ice and may also produce a glassy phase. Primary drying then lowers chamber pressure so ice sublimes directly to vapor without passing through a liquid stage. Secondary drying raises the temperature modestly to remove bound water. The result is a porous, dry solid that usually reconstitutes quickly. Each stage influences pore structure, residual moisture, and stability.
| Property | Value | Notes |

| Common synonyms | freeze-drying, lyophilisation, cryodesiccation | Lyophilization is common in pharmaceutical literature. |
| Typical chamber pressure during primary drying | 0.05–0.5 mbar (5–50 Pa) | Must remain below the triple point of water. |
| Typical shelf temperature during freezing | −40 to −20 °C | Lower temperatures may be used for eutectic systems. |
| Typical residual moisture after secondary drying | 0.5–3% w/w | Product-dependent; low moisture improves stability but can cause over-drying. |
| Typical analytical method for residual moisture | Karl Fischer titration or loss on drying | Thermogravimetric methods are also used. |
A formulation often contains excipients that protect the active ingredient during freezing and drying. Bulking agents provide structure, while lyoprotectants stabilize sensitive molecules. The freezing step can produce ice crystals whose size and distribution affect the drying rate, and cycle design includes freezing, annealing, and drying phases. If the product temperature rises above a critical value, the cake may collapse or lose its porous structure. Successful lyophilization therefore depends on the interaction between formulation, equipment, and cycle design.
Lyophilization is a dehydration process that removes water from a frozen material by sublimation under low pressure. The material is first frozen to convert liquid water into ice. Next, the pressure is reduced below the triple point of water so that ice changes directly into vapor without passing through a liquid phase. This step is called primary drying. The result is a porous solid or cake that retains the original shape of the frozen solution.
The physics of freeze-drying couples heat transfer, mass transfer, and phase change. Heat supplied through the shelf must reach the sublimation front without melting the ice or degrading the product. Water vapor then travels through the already dried layer and leaves the chamber, where low pressure and cold traps keep it from returning. The dried layer acts as a resistance to vapor flow, so drying rate changes as the front recedes. Open questions remain about how pore structure and formulation heterogeneity affect drying uniformity at larger scales.
Lyophilization removes water from a frozen material by sublimation under reduced pressure. The process begins with freezing, which converts liquid water into ice and concentrates dissolved solids. Primary drying then lowers chamber pressure so ice changes directly into vapor without passing through a liquid phase. Secondary drying raises the shelf temperature to remove bound water that remains after ice sublimation. The result is a dry, porous structure that can be reconstituted later.
The process relies on the phase diagram of water, where the triple point marks the conditions at which ice, liquid water, and vapor coexist. By maintaining pressure below this point, typically around 0.01 to 0.1 millibar, sublimation becomes the dominant mechanism. Formulations often include excipients such as sugars or polymers that act as lyoprotectants and bulking agents. These additives help preserve the structure of the active ingredient and prevent collapse during drying. The choice of excipient and freezing rate influences the final cake morphology and stability.
Industries use lyophilization for pharmaceuticals, biological products, and food preservation. In the pharmaceutical sector, it extends the shelf life of injectable drugs, vaccines, and proteins that are unstable in aqueous solution. Food manufacturers apply freeze-drying to coffee, fruits, and ready meals to retain flavor and texture. The process is energy-intensive and requires specialized equipment, which limits its use to high-value products. Ongoing research examines how formulation and process parameters affect the quality of the final dried product.
Lyophilization, also known as freeze-drying, is a process that removes water from a material by freezing it and then reducing pressure to allow ice to sublimate directly into vapor. The method begins with a freezing step that solidifies the water content. Next, primary drying lowers the pressure below the triple point of water, enabling sublimation without passing through a liquid phase. A final secondary drying step removes bound water through desorption. This sequence produces a dry, porous cake that can be reconstituted later.
The Houthi militias have captured dozens of tanks and masses of heavy weaponry from the Yemeni Armed Forces. In February 2017, the Houthis revealed their drone program. Between mid-2018 and 2019, long-range ballistic missile attacks decreased in frequency, while the Houthis increasingly began using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and artillery. UAVs were used for both attacks on military and civilian targets and reconnaissance. The Qasef UAV, which can carry up to 30 kilograms (66 lb) of explosives, had been used in over a dozen Houthi attacks since 2016. The Sammad-2, Sammad-3, and Qasif-2K suicide drones were unveiled in 2019. Houthi drone attacks peaked in 2021, with many targeting Saudi Arabia. In June 2019, the Saudi-led coalition stated that the Houthis had launched 226 ballistic missiles during the insurgency so far. The 2019 Abqaiq–Khurais attack targeted the Saudi Aramco oil processing facilities at Abqaiq and Khurais in eastern Saudi Arabia on 14 September 2019. The Houthi movement claimed responsibility, though the United States has asserted that Iran was behind the attack. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said that "Yemeni people are exercising their legitimate right of defence ... the attacks were a reciprocal response to aggression against Yemen for years." The Houthis unveiled the Palestine-2 missile in June 2024, which closely resembled the Iranian Fattah-1 and Kheibar Shekan missiles. According to the Houthis, the missile was locally made, a claim rejected by defense analysts.

Naloxone is useful in treating both acute opioid overdose and respiratory or mental depression due to opioids. Whether it is useful in those in cardiac arrest due to an opioid overdose is unclear. It is included as a part of emergency overdose response kits distributed to heroin, fentanyl, and other opioid drug users, and to emergency responders. This has been shown to reduce rates of deaths due to overdose. A prescription for naloxone is recommended if a person is on a high dose of opioid (>100 mg of morphine equivalence/day), is prescribed any dose of opioid accompanied by a benzodiazepine, or is suspected or known to use opioids nonmedically. Prescribing naloxone should be accompanied by standard education that includes preventing, identifying, and responding to an overdose; rescue breathing; and calling emergency services. Distribution of naloxone to individuals likely to encounter people who overdose is one aspect of harm reduction strategies. However, with opioids that have longer half-lives, respiratory depression returns after naloxone has worn off; therefore, adequate dosing and continuous monitoring may be necessary.

The right to freedom of speech and association is guaranteed by Article 14(1) of the Constitution of Singapore, although there are provisions in the subsequent subsection that regulate them. The government has restricted freedom of speech and freedom of the press as well as some civil and political rights. In 2023, Singapore was ranked 129th out of 180 nations by Reporters Without Borders on the global Press Freedom Index. Freedom House ranks Singapore as "partly free" in its Freedom in the World report, and the Economist Intelligence Unit ranks Singapore as a "flawed democracy", the second freest rank of four, in its "Democracy Index". All public gatherings of five or more people require police permits, and protests may legally be held only at the Speakers' Corner. In the Corruption Perceptions Index, which ranks countries by "perceived levels of public sector corruption", Singapore has consistently ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world, in spite of being illiberal. Singapore's unique combination of a strong, soft-authoritarian government with an emphasis on meritocracy is known as the "Singapore model", and is regarded as a key factor behind Singapore's political stability, economic growth, and harmonious social order. In 2021, the World Justice Project's Rule of Law Index ranked Singapore as 17th overall among the world's 193 countries for adherence to the rule of law.
In February 2018, The Marshall Project published an investigation reporting that the new label allowed Johnson & Johnson to market Invega Sustenna as a way to keep people out of prison or jail. John Snook, executive director of the Treatment Advocacy Center, described the "stay-out-of-jail" marketing approach as a "depressing commentary" on the state of mental health treatment. Critics noted that the PRIDE study did not compare Invega Sustenna with other long-acting injectable antipsychotics, only with daily oral antipsychotics, and that the reduced rate of incarceration was likely due to improved drug adherence rather than a unique property of paliperidone palmitate. A 2022 review of internal pharmaceutical industry documents, published in the Journal of Correctional Health Care, identified Janssen as one of at least two companies that directly marketed antipsychotics to jails and prisons to increase sales. The review found that marketing strategies included targeted promotions, indirect "educational" advertising, and efforts to influence state formulary advisory boards. Concerns have also been raised about industry influence on the evidence base for long‑acting injectable (LAI) antipsychotics. In a 2024 paper in Accountability in Research, Lisa Cosgrove and colleagues presented a case analysis arguing that systematic reviews comparing LAIs to oral antipsychotics can be "shaped by commercial interests" and that financial conflicts of interest among review authors may "undermine patient‑centered models of recovery and care."
==== Development of oral antivirals ==== In November 2021, Pfizer launched a new COVID-19 oral antivirus treatment known as Paxlovid. In January 2022, the Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla confirmed that the trial results of a fourth dose were pending until March 2022. He said that the firm was setting up a collaboration to develop an anti-COVID pill treatment along with a French company, Novasep. He also said the COVID vaccine was "safe and efficient" for children. In May 2022, reports emerged of patients experiencing "rebound" symptoms after completing a five-day course of Paxlovid. The FDA responded by announcing they had performed additional analyses of the drug's clinical trial data, and decided against changing its recommendations. U.S. President Joe Biden and Dr. Anthony Fauci were both reported to experience this rebound syndrome in the months that followed, while continuing to recommend the drug for those who may benefit from it.
Until late 1976, black Rhodesians could not hold ranks higher than Sub-Inspector in the BSAP, only white Rhodesians could gain commissioned rank. After moderate black leader Bishop Abel Muzorewa was elected in the 1979 elections the promotion of African members hastened. After Robert Mugabe took power, the force followed a racial policy of "Africanisation", in which senior white officers were forcibly retired and their positions filled by black officers. The rank structure was unique; black policemen (known colloquially as "Mapolisa") were Constables, Sergeants, Senior Sergeants, Sergeant Majors, and Sub Inspectors. The white police (known colloquially as 'Majoni') ranks began at Patrol Officer (single gold bar on each shoulder), proceeding to Senior Patrol Officer (two gold bars), Section Officer (three gold bars), and thereafter to Inspector, Chief Inspector and commissioned ranks, etc., as per UK police rank structures. From 1977 Inspector and Chief Inspector became commissioned ranks to better align the Police ranks with those of the rest of the Security Forces. Lance and Staff rank prefixes were also used were appropriate in a similar manner to most Commonwealth armed forces. Members serving under CID had the prefix 'Detective' to their rank e.g. Detective Section Officer, abbreviated to D/SO. The prefix was dropped once a member attained the rank of Superintendent. White officers were assigned separate mess facilities to the black police and were obliged to employ black 'batmen'.
Glover's Christian Scientists' Home." According to McClure's, there was a regular turnover of tenants and domestic staff, whom Eddy accused of stealing from the house; she blamed Richard Kennedy for using mesmerism to turn people against her. According to Peel, there was gossip about the attractive woman, the men who came and went, and whether she was engaged in witchcraft. She was hurt, he wrote, but made light of it: "Of course I believe in free love; I love everyone."

Between 25 and 28 July, the evaluation indices of the Lula government increased and surpassed disapproval, with 50.3% approval. According to AtlasIntel/Bloomberg, the recovery in Lula's popularity ratings took place amid the firm stance adopted by the Brazilian president in the face of the increase in tariffs announced by Donald Trump, then president of the United States, and the sanctions imposed by the U.S. government on Brazil, largely articulated by Eduardo Bolsonaro.
== Medical uses == In the US, bempedoic acid is indicated for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia in combination with diet and the highest tolerated statin therapy in adults with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, or with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, who need additional lowering of LDL cholesterol. In the EU, bempedoic acid is indicated in adults with primary hypercholesterolaemia (heterozygous familial and non familial) or mixed dyslipidaemia, as an adjunct to diet in combination with a statin or statin with other lipid-lowering therapies in patients unable to reach LDL-C goals with the maximum tolerated dose of a statin; or alone or in combination with other lipid-lowering therapies in patients who are statin intolerant, or for whom a statin is contraindicated. Evidence for primary prevention is limited. A secondary analysis from the largest trial showed the potential for benefit in primary prevention; however, the number of individuals was small, and all participants were at high risk for ASCVD.
Camurus is a company focused on the development of lipid lyotropic liquid crystal structures for pharmaceutical drug delivery applications. These structures are well-defined three-dimensional formations consisting of lipophilic and hydrophilic domains that can be either interconnected or isolated depending on the environmentally induced phase conditions. The unique crystalline structures offer a unique way of encapsulating and transporting Active pharmaceutical ingredients, such as small molecules, peptides and proteins through the body. The structures also allow for the use of controlled release and prevention of degradation of fragile short half live molecules, a serious issue for amino-acid based drugs.
=== Thorium-234 === 234Th is an isotope of thorium whose nuclei contain 144 neutrons. 234Th has a half-life of 24.11 days; it emits a beta particle, transmuting into protactinium-234 with a decay energy around 0.27 MeV. Uranium-238 almost always produces isotope of thorium on decay (although in rare cases it undergoes spontaneous fission, and even more rarely double beta decay).
Insulin is an endogenous hormone, which is produced by the pancreas. The insulin protein has been highly conserved across evolutionary time, and is present in both mammals and invertebrates. The insulin/insulin-like growth factor signalling pathway (IIS) has been extensively studied in species including nematode worms (e.g.C. elegans), flies (Drosophila melanogaster) and mice (Mus musculus). Its mechanisms of action are highly similar across species. Both type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes are marked by a loss of pancreatic function, though to differing degrees. People who are affected with diabetes are referred to as diabetics. Many diabetics require an exogenous source of insulin to keep their blood sugar levels within a safe target range. In 1916, Nicolae C. Paulescu (1869–1931) succeeded in developing an aqueous pancreatic extract that normalized a diabetic dog. In 1921, he published 4 papers in the Society of Biology in Paris centering on the successful effects of the pancreatic extract in diabetic dogs. Research on the Role of the Pancreas in Food Assimilation by Paulescu was published in August 1921 in the Archives Internationales de Physiologie, Liège, Belgium. Initially, the only way to obtain insulin for clinical use was to extract it from the pancreas of another creature. Animal glands were obtainable as a waste product of the meatpacking industry. Insulin was derived primarily from cows (bovine) (Thorburn Brailsford Robertson (Australia); Eli Lilly and Company (USA)) and pigs (porcine) (Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium).

Yes, the terms are generally interchangeable. Lyophilization is more common in pharmaceutical and laboratory contexts, while freeze-drying appears widely in food science and general writing. Both describe removal of solvent by sublimation under vacuum after freezing.
Reduced pressure keeps the process below the triple point of water, so ice can sublimate directly to vapor. It also lowers the temperature needed for drying, which helps preserve heat-sensitive materials. Without vacuum, melting or boiling could occur instead of controlled sublimation.
The rate depends on heat transfer to the product and mass transfer of vapor through the dried layer. A cold condenser, adequate vacuum, and suitable shelf temperature all influence speed. Formulation properties such as solid content and collapse temperature also set practical limits.
Simple drying usually removes water by evaporation from a liquid or solid, often with heat. Lyophilization first freezes the material and then removes ice by sublimation under vacuum. This avoids prolonged exposure to liquid water and high temperatures.
